Andrew Bell manuscript material : 1 item 1821

Andrew Bell, Church of England clergyman and educationist. His friends included William and Dorothy Wordsworth, and the family of Robert Southey, to whose daughter he was godfather. Southey wrote the first biography of Bell, published in 1844. To the Rev. N. J. Hollingsworth : 1 autograph letter signed ; 3 Nov 1821 (MISC 3385), instructing him to direct mail care of Robert Southey at Keswick.

Andrew Bell, born St. Andrews, Scotland, 27th March 1753; entered St. Andrews University aged sixteen to study mathematics and natural philosophy; moved to America and became a tutor to a family that owned a tobacco planation in Virginia. Bell returned to St. Andrews in 1781 where he took orders in the Church of England. After a period at the Episcopal Chapel in Leith he became an army chaplain in India.
